What is Utah Select?

Legitimizing the sport

Since 2018 the URA has hosted all sorts of athletes in our events.  We want to better support those who are most dedicated and who choose to make roundnet their primary sport.

Athletes in all sports practice and train outside of their matches, and roundnet is no different. It's no longer enough to just show up to a tournament and expect to perform well.  Our program is designed to truly prepare yourself as a competitive roundnet athlete.

Whether you are still in school or a working professional, the spike club is open to all ages and skill levels, as long as you are dedicated to the program.

Club and Private Sessions

We will have weekly practice sessions led by at least 1 coach for each of our regions.  It is expected for each athlete to attend at least 1 practice a week, but you are welcome to attend 2 or 3 as well for extra practice.  They will happen at the start of our URA pick-ups, with the Utah Select training happening the first hour with our coaches, and then everyone can hop in to join the public pick-up afterwards.

Coaches will also host private training sessions for each 2 player team between each Major, giving personalized attention to specific skills, and team chemistry as you compete with a specific teammate at each tournament.

Provo: Tuesdays

Riverton: Wednesdays

American Fork: Thursdays

Putting your skills to the test

We expect our Utah Select athletes to improve on their results tournament after tournament, and climb those rankings faster than everyone else.  This is why registration for each URA Major is included in your membership.

You get to choose your teammate for each tournament, but we suggest teaming up with other Utah Select players at Majors so that your results can be included for  the Regional competitions.

Our Team

The Utah Select SC is led by 3 of the most knowledgable and invested members of the Utah Roundnet community. Each coach focuses on different aspects of the game creating a balanced training program for our players.

Father Church

Church is the Father of the roundnet community here in Utah, guiding his flock since 2016.  As the first Premier qualified player in Utah, he also has the most tournament experience having played in 121 tournaments going into the start of the 2023 season.

With 59 tournament wins and 89 podium finishes, Church has also competed in the Pro division at Nationals 3 times, and being a part of the  #5 ranked team in the world in 2019.

Church's training primarily focuses on offense, particularly in the art of finishing. He will work with you on your footwork and mechanics to keep the ball away from the defenders.

The Player's Coach

Bryant is one of of the most well rounded players you'll find, and he's not afraid to play with a variety of different teammates.  In the 2022 URA season, he was able to podium at 6 of the 10 URA Majors, with 5 different teammates. He has also been a leader for the BYU squad, a 3 time winner of the Rocky Mountain Sectional.

His other proud achievements include coaching the Alpine squad at the AYSL high school nationals and leading them to a 2nd place finish!

Bryant is known for his athleticism and defensive execution.  One of his favorite mottos is "Defense wins games" and always focuses on forcing the defensive breaks as often as possible.

Mr. Utah Roundnet

Although Sanford is not a coach in the same regard to Church and Bryant, he is highly invested in this Utah Select SC program.  He has been passionate about the growth of high school players, implementing the first high school league in the world back in 2019.

Running Utah Roundnet full time, allows Sanford the flexibility to step in as needed and offer additional training and attention to players most dedicated to roundnet competition.

Sanford might be past his prime in athleticism, but he does focus a lot of attention on roundnet IQ and using your own skills to take advantage of the opponents weaknesses.

FAQs

  • What if I can't afford the club fees?

We don't want finances to get in the way of anyone's passion to spike.  We can reduce some of the club fee perks, and also have options for financial assistance and scholarship opportunities for low income families.  Please apply to get more information.

  • Do I have to commit for the entire season?

Club members are expected to commit for the entire season (March-October), except for extenuating circumstances known up front (moving away for college/mission).

Because there are limited spots available, we want to ensure that the players who are dedicated to the entire season are selected because our coaches will be committed to coaching all season as well.

  • If I'm going on a mission or leaving for college mid-season, can I still join?

We understand these life decisions are a part of our athletes' spike careers, and although we miss them when they are gone, we absolutely are happy to have them be a part of Utah Select while they are home.  Please communicate up front what your plans are so we can plan accordingly to fill your spot from our waitlisted players when you leave.

  • Can I apply after March 4th?

Yes you can, but spots will be given first to those who applied before the deadline.  But if you do decide to apply later, we are happy to review and offer a spot if available.  Also, we very well may have players leaving on missions and will have spots open up throughout the year.

Sign up fees will still be applicable to pay for apparel, and the monthly dues will start once accepted to the program.

  • What factors will determine who is selected?

The main factor is commitment and desire. We want our players dedicated to train, attend, and have the passion to improve.  The secondary determination will be based on the number of spots available in each region. If one region is full, we may invite you to be a part of another region that has available spots.

  • Are there any restrictions for age or skill level?

There are no restrictions, although middle school, high school, and college aged athletes will have priority as a big focus is within our school clubs.

For skill level, as long as you can play fairly consistently with some athletic ability, our coaches are happy to train you up.

  • What apparel will the spike club members receive?

Members will receive custom apparel made exclusively for the Utah Select SC:

    • T-shirt
    • Joggers
    • Warm-up hoodie
    • Custom jersey
  • When and where will practices be?

Practices will be held at the beginning of the usual URA pick-ups in Provo (Tuesdays), Riverton (Wednesdays), and American Fork (Thursdays). The start time may adjust during the year based on sunlight and temperatures.

  • When and where will team training sessions be?

It will be up to the players to schedule their team training sessions with either coach. Although coaches aren't available 100% of the time, they are committed to making their schedules flexible to allow these private trainings.  It is suggested that teams schedule these trainings 2-3 weeks in advance and don't wait until the last minute.
